[ Flash Forward ]

The Khajiit mumbled a string of quiet curses, the Dunmeris slurred and adequately reflecting his displeasure at being conscious in such a state. He lifted his hand to rub at his face, wincing at a scrape of metal against metal, ears pressed back in a futile attempt to keep out the noise. It didn’t keep out the next one, either.

“You’re awake.” J’hasi’s eyes snapped open, ears trained on the source, cursing the awful hangover pounding in his skull as he tried to scramble further away, but only wobbled and fell over. The Altmer from last night was there, and gods damn it all, he should’ve fucking known.

It had been a Thalmor trap.

Sier, take notes.

J’hasi is usually fairly nonaggressive towards people. The only times he’ll attack people is if they either attack him first, or if they’re attacking friends, allies, or those who can’t properly defend themselves. Members of certain groups that have attacked him in the past or are associated with said groups he tends to keep on his guard until he’s sure they’ll just leave him be.

Included in this tends to be the usual run of bandits, highwaymen, mercenaries, and in some cases, witchhunters of varying stripes. If they attack, he defends himself. If they realize their mistake and run, he’ll usually let them go if it was just a minor scuffle. If they killed any innocents, he’ll run them down and end them. The killing tends to be on a case-by-case basis, unless he’s aware of a camp that’s been murdering travelers, in which case they’re all guilty. He doesn’t like killing them, but he knows that if they don’t have reason to change, they’re only going to hurt more innocent people.

And then there’s the Thalmor.

He used to take the same approach with them as he did the Dark Brotherhood, watching, waiting, seeing if they would attack him first before attacking. But then when almost every Thalmor member he ran across attacked him or otherwise tried to capture him, he resorted to ‘slip away unseen or unnoticed if possible, otherwise, go for the kill’.

There have been exceptions of course. Sometimes he had to run if there were too many, one Thalmor left after he was captured, and another he had left with only a concussion and a face full of fresh claw marks. Icarus, Aldaril, and Ancano have been left untouched.

As Ic, Al, and Ancano are living in close proximity, he’s had to play pretend that he’s just some traveler that has business with the College (not entirely a lie, but not the whole truth either). If any of them turned up dead (either by someone else murdering them, or if they attacked him or got wind of who/what he was and had to defend himself), then it could spell death or discovery for him. Winterhold is a small place, and if he suddenly left after a Thalmor was murdered…it wouldn’t look too good for him. Especially if Icarus was the one killed, as the two are known to butt heads to members of the College at least.

He’s been trying to avoid them as much as he can, but with Icarus taking classes with him (with Ancano often hovering about), and Aldaril usually hanging around the College grounds with the impression that they’re friendly, it’s more difficult than he had originally thought.
